A Supportive Housing, Senior Community Catalyzes Marlton Square Redevelopment

Metro @ Buckingham is a senior affordable housing community located within Marlton Square, a former shopping center in the Baldwin Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles. The 22-acre Marlton Square was a major retail site in the mid-20th century but saw a gradual decline in the following decades.

There have been several efforts to revitalize Marlton Square over the decades, but false starts left the site vacant. In working with the City of Los Angeles, Meta Housing took over construction of an unfinished 70-unit building next door, named Buckingham Place Senior Housing. After its completion, Meta Housing then focused its efforts on developing Metro @ Buckingham.

Meta Housing secured federal and state tax credits and generated investment from Bank of America and Century Housing. Metro @ Buckingham also receives rental assistance from the County of Los Angeles, Department of Health Services through their Flexible Housing Subsidy Pool (FHSP). The development includes housing with case management services for 51 seniors who have previously experienced homelessness. All residents have access to a multi-purpose community room, fitness center, library with complementary computers, and a game room. Metro @ Buckingham also shares a grand courtyard with Buckingham Place Senior Housing with barbeques, a projector screen, and several raised gardens for residents to grow vegetables, herbs, and flowers.

Since its opening, Metro @ Buckingham has been a catalyst for additional Marlton Square redevelopment. Learn more about the latest plans to revitalize Marlton Square in the articles section below.
